A New Jersey man has been handed a hefty prison sentence for a series of violent hate crimes against Orthodox Jews in Lakewood.
On April 8, 2022, 29-year-old Dion Marsh forcibly stabbed an Orthodox Jewish man and stole his car. He then ran over four others, severely injuring them. Following his arrest, Marsh admitted that he specifically targeted his victims based on their appearance as Orthodox Jews.
Court documents quote Marsh as saying the attacks were necessary because “Hasidic Jews were the real devils.” He also told authorities that religious Jews were “100 percent” obnoxious to his own religion.
Lakewood’s Jewish community can now breathe a sigh of relief after a US Federal judge sentenced Marsh on Tuesday to 40 years in prison followed by 5 years of supervised release.
As news of Marsh’s sentencing spread, New Jersey officials spoke out against the surge in antisemitic violence.
“Enough is enough, hate-fueled attacks on the Orthodox Jewish community are abhorrent, unlawful and contrary to our values as Americans,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said. “As we aggressively work to confront and eradicate antisemitic violence, we recognize the unique vulnerabilities faced by Orthodox Jews who are often targeted because of religious clothing and yarmulkes.”
Since Hamas’ indiscriminate massacre against Israel on October 7, Jewish communities across America have been plagued by anxiety over an increase in antisemitic incidents. According to the Anti-Defamation League, 5,204 antisemitic cases have been reported since that fateful day, which is a 334% increase from the same time period last year.
